SmartCAM v2019 User Interface Improvements

We enhance the SmartCAM User Interface in most releases. Our changes reflect the trend in software 'usability' and the expectations of software use, let alone by a CAM engineer. The Version 2019 release benefits from detail changes that deliver a further refined and refreshed appearance to all of the SmartCAM applications.

We comment here on each of the areas that have been subject to change and improvement, but we have found it a difficult thing to convey on a web page - SmartCAM users can really only perceive the collective effect of our changes when beginning to use them.

Individually Sized Toolbars

Each application toolbar can be individually sized; instead of one size being applied to all toolbars. The size of a particular toolbar is easily set by right-clicking on it and using the fly-out menu to select a large, medium or small setting for that toolbar. The screen layout and user interface generally benefit from this ability to apply this user preference.

Optional Text on Toolbars

An option has been introduced to allow the display of text around the icon used on toolbar buttons.

This seemingly small enhancement really does help to improve the ease of use of SmartCAM, especially for new or infrequent users of our applications. Many of us are accustomed to hovering over a toolbar button to read the tooltip help available for it, now the ability to display a short indication of the purpose of the button / task can be displayed.

It really is on the button.

Users who benefit from the excellent customization capabilities of SmartCAM are able to include their own icon button text on buttons that are associated with macros.

Toolbar Sets

A Toolbar Set stores the Toolbars that are enabled in the user interface, where they are located on-screen, their orientation, the icon size for each Toolbar, and whether button text is displayed and where it is positioned.

Each of those aspects of Toolbar setups is subject to user preferences. Toolbar Sets can now easily be configured, saved and recalled for global use or per-user settings if required.

We have applied the extended Toolbar functionality to create a new set of default toolbars configured for Version 2019.

Our goal has been to position commonly-used functionality in logical locations and workflow order. The arrangement is also designed to reduce the amount of mouse travel required to drive SmartCAM.

Gradient background in the Graphics View

Another small modernization change; you can enable a gradient background for the graphics view if you prefer. The 'top' and 'bottom' colors of the gradient can be set according to user preference.

Zoom View to Active Group

This is an enhancement that experienced SmartCAM users are really going to like. The 'Active group' is a key concept in SmartCAM usage, an ability to zoom the graphics view to the extent of the Active Group is a real bonus.
