SmartCAM v2016 User Interface Improvements

A part of the SmartCAM development plan is to deliver a number of graphical user interface and usability improvements with every release, each providing usability and flexibility enhancements that even further improve the SmartCAM interaction experience.

The SmartCAM List View has a new look

The SmartCAM List View is a key component of the SmartCAM User Interface. It benefits from a major redesign in this release.

The Process Model content is displayed in a new expandable / collapsible tree structure using one of a set of pre-defined views:

  • Layer/Step - Organizes the model data by Step or Layer.
  • Layer/Tool - Organizes CAM Step geometry by Tool, then by Step. CAD geometry is grouped by Layer.
  • Layer/Step - Workplane - Groups the Process Model by CAM Step or CAD Layer geometry, then subsorts by assigned Workplane.
  • Workplane - Layer/Step - Organizes the Process Model by Workplane, then subsorts by CAM Step or CAD Layer.
  • Context - A linear, flat view without geometry grouping. This view resembles the original SmartCAM List View.

This means that the most appropriate List View for the particular Toolpath Modeling task in hand can be applied, or simply according to user preference.

The list of Process Model data associated with Steps, Tools, Layers, Profiles, Hole Sequences, and Workplanes can be expanded and collapsed in the List View, with the exception of when using Context View.

SmartCAM programmers will discover that the new List View functionality significantly enhances the user interface experience, Process Model navigation, ease of use and productivity.

Select Holes as Profile

SmartCAM users know about the important concept of adding and removing elements to the SmartCAM Active Group. The Profile Group Select tool has been extended to enable the selection of identical holes or hole features that are sequential in the Process Model database, rather like the technique of selecting a profile in SmartCAM.

‘Hole Profiles’ are displayed in the SmartCAM List View as a single expandable item, similar to the way that geometry profiles or solid models are displayed.

Another fundamental SmartCAM concept of setting the Insert Position can be used with ‘Hole Profiles’ when ‘entity type’ is set to ‘Profile’, meaning that it is now easier to place the Insert Position immediately before or after a sequence of hole features in the Process Model.

'Go To Insert' added to Right Mouse Button Menus

The Current Insert Position is key to the use of SmartCAM. A ‘Go To Insert’ option has been added to the menu displayed when right-clicking on an item in the List View. A SmartCAM user would previously have had to scroll through the List View content to see the Insert Position.

If the Insert position is within a collapsed tree branch, the branch will be expanded in order to display its location.

More Colors and improved access to Color settings

More Colors available on the Color Palette

The number of Colors available on the Color Palette has been increased from 16 to 64, adding significantly greater color scope for CAD Layers and CAM Steps.

Additional and faster access to the SmartCAM Color Palette

A new ‘Edit Colors’ command has been added to the Utility Menu which provides faster access to the SmartCAM Color Palette. The Color table can still be modified using the previous Utility - Options - Color Options category.

A new Color button for the Add / Edit Step dialog box.

A new Color button can now be used to set the CAM Step color when creating or editing CAM Steps, providing an easier and more convenient means of setting the color used for that CAM Step. Setting the color of a CAM Step was previously a separate editing task. The previous method is retained for flexibility.

Memo / Note Text boxes Improved

Text / Memo / Note input fields now display with horizontal and vertical scroll bars, and the previous cut, copy and paste functions have been replaced with standard Windows Right Mouse Button and keyboard shortcut editing behavior.
