SmartCAM V15: User Interface and Visualization Improvements

Version 15 provides numerous new features that both modernize the product and greatly improve usability. While version 15 does not change the fundamental user interface, or the familiar ways of working within SmartCAM, it does introduce several new concepts, and is readily recognizable as improved.

New Icons

The most obvious feature is the use of new and more detailed icons which make better use of color. This change not only makes the product look better, it also makes it easier to understand what the icons represent.

In addition, the icons are now displayed with the corresponding menu commands, reinforcing the connection to the commands as well as the panels and dialog boxes.

Toolbar Improvements

The SmartCAM icon toolbars have also been improved. New drop-down icon menus are now provided for all SmartCAM "toolbox" commands, and the Property Change menu commands. These new icon menus provide quick, direct access to each command and eliminate the need to select the command from the Workbench/Toolbox area.

When the icon bar is positioned at the top of the window, it now extends across the entire screen above the Workbench menu.

New Element Pop-up Menu

When the cursor is placed over an element in either the list view or the graphics view and the right mouse button is clicked, the current element marker is advanced to the selected element and a pop-up menu is displayed. The context menu provides different options depending on whether accessed from the graphics view or list view.

The list view menu provides direct access to commonly used element-based commands, such as Element Data, Modify, Name, or Delete. Convenient display management options are also available, including toggling the Mask status of the Step or Layer associated with an element, and filtering the list view.

The graphics view context menu has been reorganized to group related commands under pull-out menus, and a new Element pull-out menu similar to the list view menu has been added to provide access to the element commands. The graphics view display can also be conveniently filtered.

Sequence Navigation Improvements

Elements can now be selected using the right mouse button, and the mouse wheel is always available to scroll the current element marker through the element sequence in the graphics or list view. This feature is particularly useful for analyzing element sequence, for example when specifying the start and end elements of a profile for a panel.

Cut/Copy/Paste Edit Pop-up Menu

The SmartCAM input and notes fields now support Cut/Copy/Paste edit pop-up menus. The input and notes fields have been improved to support standard editing behaviors, for example double click to select a word, and triple click to select the entire field text. Also, keyboard selection methods such as Shift-End, Shift-Home, and Shift- Left/Right/Up/Down, are now supported.

Group Toolbar Orientation

A new pop-up menu on the floating Group Toolbar allows vertical or horizontal orientation. This option provides more flexibility in the user interface configuration, and the horizontal orientation allows the Group Toolbar to be placed next to the panel to minimize graphics view obstruction.

Multiple Layer Editing

The Edit Layer function has been enhanced to allow multiple Layers to be edited without requiring the dialog box to be closed and reopened for each layer. With the new "Apply" button the current settings are applied to the selected Layer, and a new Layer can then be selected and modified. This feature saves time when editing many Layers, for example when adding or changing layer names.

New View Orientation Menu and Icon

A new View Orientation pull-out menu has been added to provide access to standard views, including multiple Iso-view orientations. Each view command changes the orientation and fits the view to the window size.

A new icon menu has also been added to the toolbar, providing immediate access to each of the views found on the View Orientation menu. This makes it very easy to reorient the model to any of the standard views.

File Select Browsing

A File Select button has been added to the Edit Macro Bar Button dialog box. This button opens a File Open dialog, which allows you to find and select the macro to associate with the Toolbar button.

Start-up Window Position

SmartCAM will remember its screen location, on either a primary or secondary monitor, and start at that position the next time it is started.
